Public Notice, Clarification: 2011-07-15
Comments attributed to the CEO of Minds and Machines LLC (“M+M”) in a July 12th on-line interview have led to some confusion regarding the relationship between CoCCA and M+M and our respective registry systems. CoCCA wishes M+M well in their commercial pursuits however CoCCA is compelled to clarify the relationship where representations have resulted in public confusion.
CoCCA is not under contract to develop a proprietary “espresso” registry system for M+M's exclusive use, if you have questions regarding the espresso registry system please contact M+M. We are not privy to any of the details surrounding M+M's espresso project - CoCCA is not involved in espresso development. We understand however that M+M has for several years intended to develop espresso as a gTLD fork of the CoCCA software. This is permissible under the open source license, we have formally blessed the initiative and are pleased by this display of confidence in our technology.
CoCCA Registry Services Limited is a privately owned company, neither Minds and Machines LLC of Santa Monica California (M+M) nor their parent company Top Level Domain Holdings Ltd. of London (TLDH) are investors or shareholders. Neither M+M nor TLDH author, own, distribute or license the CoCCA software. CoCCA and M+M are not collaborating on technical, marketing or policy matters and do not share co-location facilities. Egypt’s IDN Registry ( dotMasr ) becomes Tenth TLD on African Continent to Deploy CoCCA Registry Software.
Cairo | 21-June-2010
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) has deployed its production domain name registry system for Egypt's Internationalized Domain Name country code Top Level Domain (IDN ccTLD). The TRA's registry system is based on the Council of Country Code Administrators' (CoCCA) EPP registry system.
Egypt joins Kenya (.ke), Madagascar (.mg), Mauritius (.mu), Nigeria (.ng), Cameroon (.cm), Mozambique (.mz) , Namibia (.na), Egypt ASCII (.eg) and several other African countries in deploying the CoCCA registry system in-country. After evaluating numerous options, Egypt made the decision to base their IDN registry on the EPP software developed by CoCCA. The dotMasr project has proven to be an interesting intellectual and technical challenge for both NTRA and CoCCA developers. |

CoCCA has continued to aid Timor-Leste in expanding its internet networking capacity with multiple systems on mainland Timor as well as the island of Atauro and now in the enclave of Oecussi. Oecussi is part of the country of Timor but is surrounded on three sides by West Timor ( Indonesia) , and the fourth by the sea. A 12-hour ferry journey or 7 hour drive, Oecussi is desperately isolated from its mother country. Isolation, poverty and the legacy of nearly 25 years of unrest has resulted in a situation where information sharing across borders in this region is at a minimum. However, last week CoCCA sponsored the installation of a satellite connection and network in Padiae, Oecussi at the Padiae Community Center. With the kit and a technician from CoCCA and assistance from six or seven youth from the area the network was successfully connected and the leader of the community center Madre Erma Luz was able to send the first email. The jump from unreliable once weekly post-mail to a solar powered satellite connection will significantly improve the residents of Oecussi’s access to the flow of information. They will use this new connection for educational research, community computer courses and communication. The grateful Madre’s explained that connecting geographically isolated parts of the world to outside information and resources has a remarkable impact on the lives of people who live there. This is the sixth remote, non-governmental institution in Timor-Leste to be connected to the internet by CoCCA, an additional four more are planned for the first quarter of 2010. |
